Dr. Nicholas Goyeneche was born and raised in Southeast Louisiana. He lettered in football and track and field in high school before “retiring” to attend LSU and focus on a career in medicine.  Having an innate interest in sports medicine and the way the human body moves, he chose to major in Kinesiology at LSU, despite the “typical pre-med route” of biology and chemistry. This decision has served him well in his career path as a sports medicine physiatrist, providing background knowledge in exercise physiology, human biomechanics, and neuromuscular control of movement. He naturally gravitated towards the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) due to its focused combination of orthopedic and neurologic expertise and conservative approach to patient care. He was selected into the PM&R residency program at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. During this 4 year program, he completed rotations focusing on non-surgical care of musculoskeletal/orthopedic and neurologic conditions. Throughout residency, he routinely volunteered at various sporting events providing medical coverage, which deepened his love and interest in advancing his career in the field of sports medicine. He eventually was selected as the 2014-2015 sports and musculoskeletal medicine fellow at The Andrews Institute in Gulf Breeze, Florida.

This 12 month accredited training program exposed him daily to the most advanced diagnostic and treatment options available. The Andrews Institute is a dedicated orthopedic medicine center designed by world renown surgeon Dr. James Andrews, who has served as team physician of the Washington Redskins and Auburn Tigers. The Institute was designed to provide state-of-the-art orthopedic care for elite level athletes from around the globe, to weekend warriors, to non-athletes alike. Dr. Goyeneche was able to learn the nuances of musculoskeletal ultrasound from Dr. Joshua Hackel, an international instructor and researcher on the subject. Dr. Hackel and Dr. Adam Anz are also heavily involved in pioneering regenerative medicine science and techniques such as platelet rich plasma and stem cell injections, and Dr. Goyeneche was able to be involved in their application in the elite athlete as well. During fellowship, Dr. Goyeneche served as a team physician at The University of West Florida, provided coverage at Auburn University, and the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, the AA affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, and worked with The Eagle Fund, a program to rehabilitate and condition wounded special operations military personnel to return to active duty.

Dr. Goyeneche has been practicing at Ochsner Medical Center in Covington, Louisiana since 2015. He was one of the first physicians in the state to use ultrasound to diagnose and treat orthopedic and neurologic conditions, to perform the Tenex procedure for tendonitis, perform ultrasound guided trigger finger release, and use stem cells for orthopedic purposes. He has continued to advance his skills in musculoskeletal ultrasound, regenerative medicine, non-surgical orthopedics and sports medicine and evolve as techniques and procedures change. He enjoys teaching residents and students from LSU and The University of Queensland, a dual medical school between the Australian school and Ochsner Medical Center. He is active in clinical research and the authoring of text book chapters in the field of orthopedics and sports medicine.

In his spare time, Dr. G enjoys cheering on the LSU Tigers, playing guitar, hiking, snow skiing, playing tennis, and making new dishes on the grill.

THE NAME

Pronounced Goya-netch-ee, his unique last name is a frequent topic of conversation...and confusion. Many attempt to guess the nationality of origin, however few actually guess correctly. He has heard everything from Russian to Japanese, and most commonly Italian. The correct answer however is...Spanish! The name originates from the Basque region within the Pyrenees mountains of northern Spain. The name is believed to mean the house upstairs. Dr. Goyeneche is proud of his Hispanic heritage. His great grandfather, Rafael Goyeneche, was an accomplished architect in Mexico City, designing The Hotel Majestic in the historic Zócalo square and the original Barcardi Rum factory in Havana Cuba. Despite his last name however, Dr. Goyeneche is most heavily of Scotch-Irish decent, with a few other wetern European ethnicities mixed in...a true mutt indeed. Although the last name is pronounced similar to the spelling, Dr. G is perfectly acceptable!
